mason funnies

Mason making his dinner more acceptable to him.

A friend told me about their tradition of giving their kids an ornament each year for Christmas and then when they’re older and on their own, they’ll have 18 or so years worth of ornaments to keep. I liked that idea so I thought I would start it with Mason and allow him to pick out his ornament each year. I thought he would pick out a Dora ornament or Toy Story. He almost picked some bells. But then he saw this beauty and I guess just had to have it!

pinterest Christmas table

Every year the women’s ministry at our church hosts a dinner called Ladies Extravaganza. If you go, you can either host a table or attend as a guest. My friend Lindsey, who is way more crafty then me, hosted a table this year and let me help decorate! I envisioned a soft, vintage, rustic looking table and thanks to my new favorite site Pinterest, I had a ton of ideas in my head. I started by pinning things to a new board just for that night and then bouncing ideas off my friend to see what she thought. Once we finalized our decisions we got to work! Dummy me went to our local Jo-ann fabric store the day after Black Friday. It took 2 hours to get our supplies and get the fabric cut. AND I had Mason with me, who was actually a total trooper. Here’s what we ended up with.

I’ve seen this pin floating around and really wanted to try it. Didn’t quite come out like I planned. So that idea got scrapped:) I think I used too much paint and maybe the lace was too thin……another time perhaps.

I had some styrofoam cones leftover from a project a couple years ago that I never finished so we covered those with moss and made some stars out of branches from a dead tree we had in our backyard. That whole centerpiece cost us nothing since I already had all the materials. The biggest expense was the tablecloth that my mom lovingly made for me (and stayed up til 4am sewing it). Thanks mom! I think it cost about $35, which was half the price it would have cost since I waited 2 hours to get the fabric for it:) We also got burlap for a table runner down the middle. We got styrofoam balls and hot glued strips of fabric on some, burlap, and moss on the others for ornaments (which I forgot to take a picture of). Then we bought kraft boxes at Michael’s for .79 each. We already had the jute, extra burlap, green fabric, and tags. The greenery was leftover from the flower centerpiece. The lace ribbon was purchased with the fabric.

I found these mason jars at Wal-mart. They were 12 for $5.50. What I liked about them is that they were a really good size and they didn’t have any lettering on them. We used them for candles and for our glasses. We used doilies that my mom had for the placemats/chargers.

We were going to use a white creamer and sugar bowl, but Lindsey had these green dishes that looked so cute! So we went with those. We were going to use white napkins too, but then I remembered I had green napkins from a baby shower I hosted. The green gave the table a little pop of color and tied in with the greenery and moss for the centerpieces. We used different pieces of silverware that we each had and 2 different styles of white plates.

The flowers and greenery we got at Trader Joe’s. I usually get my flowers at Costco which would have cost $18 ($9 for the greenery and $9 for the white flowers), but Lindsey told me that she saw white flowers at Trader Joe’s so I decided to check there first hoping they sold some Christmas greens as well. Turns out they did, which saved us $9. The cans we used for vases were the bigger size enchilada sauce cans. Last year my parents cut down a tree in their yard and had some of the leftover stumps, which my friend’s husband cut for us so we could use them as a base for the flowers. I’ve seen them used as bases for flowers and as chargers, but it would be really cute to use them as coasters as well. I’m sure someone has already done it, I just haven’t seen it floating around.

And there you have it! Our Pinterest Christmas table.

a little bragging

I just want to do a little bragging about David’s sister Ashley. For any of you who may not know, David and his two siblings all sing. However, the family all knows his sister Ashley is the best. Sorry guys!  She just posted this video on youtube and I really wanted to share it, because it’s so beautiful. Hopefully this will put you in the Christmas spirit if you’re not already in one!

And in case that didn’t put you in the Christmas mood, how about a little reindeer?

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! While many were out in the cold and surviving the crowds on Black Friday (and some even getting pepper sprayed, Yikes!), I was getting a massage:) We went out later in the day when it wasn’t so crowded and still got some great deals! Win, win for us. I think I need to just hide out in cave and get all my work done that way I can relax and enjoy the rest of the year. I’m thinking that’s not going to happen. In the meantime, enjoy some pics of my friend’s little guy, Logan.

some thanksgiving thoughts

I know many of you out there are supermoms and superwives and keep a clean and tidy house all the time. I’m convinced it’s because you have laundry rooms like the ones shown below. For those of you who aren’t, I’m here to make you feel a little bit better about your mess. For those of you who are, you’re probably appalled that I’m airing my dirty laundry over the internet, pun intended (only it’s actually clean laundry):) We have a two story house and upstairs is a loft. We used to have a pool table up there where we stored and folded our laundry, but when we decided to get a new couch downstairs the pool table had to go and the old couches replaced its spot. Our old couches are our new laundry station where we dump piles and piles of clean clothes where they wait sometimes over a week to be folded and put away. I’m sure this is not a shock to my parents. When I was growing up I used to leave bowls of milk from cereal in my room for days. So if you have rooms in your house that look like mine, rest assured you’re not alone.

needs to be folded                                              ready to be put away

Maybe if I had one of these laundry rooms, I’d feel more inspired!

All of these were found on pinterest. Here’s a link in case you’d like to view my boards. As I was thinking about writing this post, it reminded me of an email that was being passed around years ago about what to be thankful for.

Speaking about being thankful, I really want to start making traditions with our family. Mason’s communication is still probably too immature, but I think next year will work. I plan on making something like this (or you can download the free printable) for Thanksgiving and making a thankful tree.

Or, it would be cute to write thanks on kraft paper and make a garland like this (here’s the link to the printable):

Does your family have any holiday traditions?

Heading down a tiny rabbit trail now…..many of you know that Mason has had some speech difficulty. While he’s still really far behind his peers (probably talking like an 18 month old), he has progressed SO much! We can actually understand a lot of what he says and we’re finally able to communicate with him. And for that, I am extremely thankful. Here’s a video of him playing with the app, Talking Tom. Please forgive my stellar video skills; I’m still learning how to use it on my new camera, plus Mason kept moving around.

And finally…..

these are a few of my favorite things

Are you singing the song now? I know I am!

I happened to be using one of my favorite products the other day (as I’m neck deep in editing wedding and newborn photos) and I was thinking about how thankful I am for it. From there I thought I would blog about some of my favorite products that I use. So here goes….

Editing

1. Red Leaf Studio actions I love, love, love these actions. More specifically, I love their film shift actions and use them on every photo. Another action of their’s that I love is called highlight recover and works great for recovering blown details on wedding dresses! This picture was edited with one of their black and white actions.

2. Florabella actions I don’t use a ton of these actions anymore because I have been using Red Leaf’s, however I almost ALWAYS use Milk and Honey on a photo and usually at a really low opacity, like 10%. I also use the Pastel Tints and Hazes action a lot (the peach and lavender ones at under 5% usually).

3. Isabella Lafrance Photography actions I use her action Indulge from the Soulful Inspire set every once in a while, but used to use them a lot. My style has changed a bit though which is why I don’t use it as often. Here’s a recent image that I used it on. I think I used one of Red Leaf’s first and then Indulge on top of it. Did I mention a lot of her actions are free?

4. MCP Actions I use her free Touch of Light/Touch of Darkness on just about every image. I don’t own any of her other actions, but am dying to try out her new Presets!

5. Itty Bitty Actions I don’t own any of Jinky’s actions either, BUT if you like her facebook page, you can download two free color pop actions. I use these on some images. I’d love to actually get a whole set!

6. Noiseware I cannot say enough good things about this plug-in. It works so great on grainy images, especially wedding receptions where the light is really low and you have to use a high ISO. It actually can come in handy for smoothing newborn skin as well. Just make sure not to over do it or you’ll have plastic looking people! Here’s an example of what it can do:

This is a crop at 100% zoomed in. This picture was taken at 4000 ISO. I probably could have used less noiseware, but I wanted to show the effect of it.

Here’s what the picture actually looks like (both are edited):

Gear

Here’s a list of gear I use:

Canon 5d mark II – I have been waiting FOREVER (okay, maybe not forever but it sure feels like it:)) for Canon to release the 5d mark III because I’m waiting for them to update the focusing system. However, since it doesn’t look like anything will be released until next year I broke down and bought the mark II so I could use it at my brother’s wedding. I needed a back up camera anyways:)

Canon 50d – this is now my back up camera, but I actually really like having both a crop sensor and a full frame. They give completely different looks with the same lens.

Canon 50mm 1.2L – my most used lens.

Canon 85mm 1.8 – I love this lens, but for some reason I don’t use it that much. It’s a bit close on a crop camera, but now that I have a full frame as well I think I’ll be using it more.

Canon 35mm 1.4L – I am not particularly fond of this lens. It’s too wide for my taste, but is a great lens for large groups and for tight spaces when you can’t back up as far as you’d like. So while I don’t use it often, it’s a necessary piece of glass.

Here’s a comparison of my lenses and the different looks they give (all taken with my 50d):

michael and nikki | brentwood wedding photographer

This past Saturday I photographed Michael and Nikki’s wedding at our church. By my side was my good friend and business partner for Pure Life Unscripted, Jenny, from Sweet Bliss Photography. A couple of the pics below are ones she shot. Michael and Nikki are such a sweet couple and you can tell how in love they are by how they look at each other. It really is so neat to watch. And to think if my hubby hadn’t invited Michael to play drums at our church 7 years ago, they may have never met! Congratulations to the both of you. Thank you for allowing Jenny and me to be a part of your special day. Enjoy your honeymoon in Monterey! Here’s a quick sneak peek for you:)

Michael bought Nikki an orange juice and had someone bring it in for her. So thoughtful!

gill family | granite bay family photographer

I have a wedding this Saturday and then my brother’s wedding next Sunday so I’m probably going to be MIA for a while, but hopefully I can get a couple wedding posts up in the next month as I work feverishly to edit these two weddings before Christmas. Not sure I can make it, but I’m gonna try my hardest. Can you believe Christmas is around the corner!? It’s not even two months away! I think I’m starting to hyperventilate just thinking about it.

Last Saturday David and I drove up to Granite Bay to meet up with some friends of ours and then we headed to Roseville for their session. I love this family and only wish they lived closer. I guess I’ll have to settle for seeing them a few times a year for now.

You can’t really tell from these pictures, but Taylor was showing us some dance moves. It started off with the twist and ended up with some arm flapping. I might have to steal some of these moves for my brother’s wedding in two weeks.
